What We Must Do

Post Carbon Toronto believes that we must begin now to create a more ecologically sustainable, low energy consumption society base on the following principals;

Transition to a steady state economy

We must prepare for a steady state economy where the only growth in material production can come from improvements in the efficiency of the use of materials – doing more with less.

Reduce consumption

Our overall consumption of energy and materials, and thus the energy that is embodied in them, must be reduced on an absolute basis and non-sustainable materials eliminated. In order to preserve our quality of life we must radically improve the efficiency of our use of energy and materials.

Stabilize population

We must implement policies to stabilize our population at levels that are ecologically supportable. Canada is one of only a very few countries that, by some estimates, has not exceeded its ecological carrying capacity. This does not mean there has to be an end to immigration, since Canada’s fertility rate is below the replacement rate, but we should devise an immigration policy that keeps the population within our carrying capacity.

Post Carbon Toronto does not support discrimination on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, age, or sexual orientation in immigration or any other policy.

Preserve and restore our ecosystems

We need to preserve our ecosystems from further damage and work to undo the damage that has already been done.

Produce locally

We must move to distributed, localized production and power systems where ever possible.
